Marker Free Transgenics: An Alternative Approach To Produce Transgenic Plants – A Review

Transgenic plants also known as genetic engineered plants containing one or more genes integrated into genome through horizontal gene transfer methods leading to a specific trait. Plants that have been genetically engineered, an approach that uses recombinant DNA techniques to create plants with new characteristics. Marker free transgenic is the generation of transgenic plants by the elimination of the “problematic” selectable marker genes from the genome of the transgenic plants/ avoiding the use of selectable marker genes in the beginning of transformation by a marker-free vector/ excise or segregate marker genes from the host genome after regeneration of transgenic plants based on the strategy called marker free transgenic. These strategies in crops and their further improvement will help to widespread public acceptance of agricultural biotechnology. The removal of marker gene from the transgenic plants supports multiple transformation cycle for transgene pyramiding. The production of marker-free bio-safe transgenic plants do not experience an additional genetic load, which must improve their productivity. In this review, different techniques and approaches for the development of marker free transgenics were discussed.
