Electrodeposition is known to be a very convenient and tunable method for preparation of electrocatalysts based on metal, alloys and composites. This review summarizes the literature data on the use of deep eutectic solvents as eco-friendly new-generation room-temperature ionic liquids for the electrochemical deposition of electrocatalysts. The advantages and prospects of electrochemical synthesis of high-efficient and reliable electrocatalysts from DES electrolytes are highlighted. It is shown that the use of DESs allows electrodepositing alloys having the compositions that are difficult and often impossible to obtain from “ordinary” aqueous solutions. Electrocatalytic coatings based on noble metals (gold, palladium, platinum, and silver), iron, nickel, cobalt, chromium and copper are characterized. Special attention is paid to the preparation of electrocatalysts for water electrolysis in the context of development of hydrogen energy.
