Titanium-aluminium-nitride (TiAlN) coatings were deposited on stainless steel (SS) substrates by reactive dc magnetron sputtering. The adhesion was evaluated using scratch adhesion testing. The technique is based on performing the scratch by a diamond stylus under increasing normal load by moving the coated sample. Loading rates were varied during scratch tests and effect was analyzed on coating adhesion. Critical loads for cohesive and adhesive failures of the coatings were observed during the scratch tests. Coefficient of friction (µ) was determined at different loading rates. At lower loads, cohesive failure phenomenon was observed with cracks and upper layer removal. While at higher loads, adhesive failure mechanism was observed with chipping, spallation and delamination.
